Teachers, did you know that you can provide your class with a free lesson about organ and tissue donation? The Nevada Donor Network provides comprehensive classes about organ and tissue donation. Our programs can be tailored to a specific grade level and subject matter. Our Public Relations Coordinator can come to your school and teach an interesting lesson on the benefits of organ and tissue donation. We don't encourage children to sign up, but we do encourage them to speak to their families about becoming an organ and tissue donor. We provide the information so that children are better able to come to their own decision based on fact, not myth. The lesson can include the following topics:

  • How many people are affected by the need of an organ transplant?
  • What organs are transplantable?
  • What diseases cause certain organs to fail?
  • What is tissue donation, and what is it used for?
  • What are the myths associated with donation?
  • How does the process of donation work?
  • Who decides who gets an organ for transplantation?

A lot of children have no idea how organ and tissue donation can affect the people around them. As they become teenagers, they will be asked at the DMV whether they would like to become organ donors, and they need to have the facts so they can make an educated decision.

This program can cover more advanced topics regarding donation, based on the level of the class. It can be tailored to math classes, science classes, health classes, and can even be used in classes that cover ethics and debate. Would you like to teach the class yourself? The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has put together an entire curriculum to help teachers teach their students about donation. Please refer to Decision Donation at www.organdonor.gov/student for full lesson plans you can use yourself! It's free!
